HRPBC v North Mymms BC 15th September 2024
2nd Leg – The Delsa Cooper Cup
We welcomed North Mymms to Rye Park today for the 2nd Leg of the Delsa Cooper Cup, it was also our final friendly of the season. This game was 5 triples with HRPBC taking a 19 shot lead into this 2nd leg and a bit too much for North Mymms BC to reduce. With all 5 triples winning on the day our highest winning triple was skipped by our new club champion Brian Metzner who during this win bowled a wrong basis, tut tut. Brian was supported by Steve Farrington and our lady champion Clare Adkins they won by 31-13 a very good performance by all and a 125-62 win on the day. The Lady captain from North Mymms presented the trophy to Don Stevenson our Captain. We also raise a few pound for MS so a good day all round.
HRPBC v Much Hadham -14th September 2024
2nd leg of the Pamart Cup
This game was reduced due to Much Hadham not being able to raise 4 triples. The game went ahead with HRPBC changing their team after 9 ends to give as many bowlers a game. With HRPBC being ahead by 61 shots after the first leg they continued to pile on the shots. The 3 triples all won with a final score of 76-18 so an overall win by 119 shots to retain the Pamart Cup.
Finals day reports
The day was affected by Dale Large having 2 heart attacks just before the finals, thankfully after treatment he is now home and recovering, we all wish him well. This caused the following competitions to be rescheduled to the start of the 2025 season, The 3 Wood Pairs, Mens Fixed Jack & Bullies 11.
Mens 4 Wood Pairs – Dave Fussell & Colin Ince played Colin Pethurst & Peter Hayden. The game was very tight early on with scores showing 4 all, 5 all, 7 ll & 8 all and that was the first 10 ends. The second half of the game saw Dave & Colin take control of this final winning 23-10. Well bowled.
Mixed 4 Wood Pairs – Theresa Ffitch & Andy Adkins played Sue Metzner & David Thomas. Theresa & Andy took control ofthis game and led 10-3 after 7 ends. Sue & Dave struggled on the day and Theresa & Andy kept the scoreboard ticking over and came away winning 24-9. Well bowled.
Ladies Fixed Jack – Clare Adkins played Debbie Ince. This game saw some great bowling from both ladies. The biggest gap between them was just 6 shots all the way through. The 11th end saw Debbie level the game at 55 all, this was anybodies game. With 15 ends played Debbie moved ahead to lead 76-74. The last 3 ends were scored 5 all, 7-3 and 4-6 which saw Clare Adkins win this match 91-89. What a great game. Clare claimed her 4th Fixed jack in a row, well done.

Beryl Sambridge 3 Wood Open Singles – Terry Pook played Tim Maynard today, Tim as the current champion was looking to retain the title. Tim started well collecting singles on a regular basis and led 5-3 after 7 ends. Tim started to fine the weight and line and Terry just couldn’t cope with Tim’s consistancy as Tim moved well away to win 16-4. With 16 ends played and 12 singles scored the final score didn’t reflect the game. Well bowled to you both. Tim retains the title.
Mens Consolation Singles – Colin Ince & Colin Pethurst face each other again after the 4 wood final earlier today. Colin Pethurst got off to a good start and led 7-2 after 9 ends, all singles. With 16 ends now played Colin Ince had leveled the game at 11 all. With the scores tight it was 13 all after 20 ends, then 16 all after 23 ends and 17 all after 25 ends. Ladies Singles – Clare Adkins played Debbie Ince for the second time today after their early morning start for the Fixed Jack, this was Debbie’s third game today. Clare got off to a good start as she moved into a 7-0 lead after just 4 ends, Debbie just couldn’t find her line in this final as she fell further behind Clare who led 15-3 after 8 ends. Clare continued to score well and went on to win 21-6. Congratulaion to Clare on winning her 4th singles title in a row.
Mens Singles – Terry Pook & Brian Metzner both playing their 2nd game of the day and both playing their first single final. Brian started well and moved into a 7-0 lead after 4 ends. Terry was bowling well however Brian was up for this game and stayed very focused as he moved into a 13-2 lead. Terry never gave up and 4 ends later he was only 9-14 down. Brian gathered him self for a final push and won 21-11. Congratulaion to Brian on winning his first Championship.
Ladies Handicap – Clare Adkins & Sue Metzner played in the Handicap game. Sue started very well as she moved into a 11-2 lead and looked good. Clare then started to find her weight and line and moved closer at 11-8. Sue then moved on to Unlucky 13 to lead by 5 shots. Clare pulled it level at 13 all so one of our ladies was going to be unlucky. Clare made her move as she pulled away and won 21-15. This competition replaced the Ladies Consolation. Well done Clare.
Mens Handicap – Dave Fussell played Micky Towers in this Handicap game. A great start by Dave saw him storm ahead to lead 7-0 after 3 ends. Dave was bowling well and kept the lead and after 10 ends led by 11-6. Dave continued to lead up to the 16th end where he led 17-14, Micky then leveled and took the lead at 17-19. THE RAY HODGES CUP
We welcomd the Association & The League to Rye Park to play this annual Match “The Ray Hodes Cup”. This was a 6 triple match with 13 members of Hoddesdon & Rye Park playing, 7 for the Association and 6 for the League. This was played in great spirit and I think every body enjoyed the day. The match was very close and with 5 games finished the Association were 1 shot down when Michael Maguire a new bowler from Bishop’s Stortford bowled his final wood of the match and tapped the jack back 6 inches to score 2 shots for the Association to win for the first time in 4 years. Thanks also go Darren Eldridge who stepped in and replaced Bob Hayter after a fall, nothing serious. Another wonderful meal by our ladies thank you. With Edie behind the bar nobody was left with a empty glass, thank you. Thank you to everyone who assisted on the day.

Ladies Pairs – Our ladies pairs were Thersa Ffitch and Sue Gibbs they were against a strong Rosehill pair of Marion Smith and Di Smith. This was a very close game and after 8 ends it was 5 all. Our pair bowling well moved into a very good lead and were 17-14 up with 2 ends to play, but a very good 6 on the 17th end by the Rosehill pair put them into 20-17 up, our ladies tried to recover but they lost 20-19,
Ladies Triples – Our triple was skipped by Sue Metzner with Linda Dunford and Jean Matthews. A very slow start saw by our triple \as they fell 9-0 down after 4 ends, our ladies then found the speed of the green and won the next 5 ends to lead 10-9. They fell behind again at 15-10 but pulled some back and were 15-13 down after 13 ends. a strong finish by Rosehill as they won 20-14.
Ladies Fours – Our ladies 4 were skipped by Karen Gray, she was with Carol Osman, Lyn Norman and Trish Miller. With Rosehill playing a very strong team this was always going to to a difficult game. The Rosehill ladies led from the start and our ladies never managed to claim many shots and lost 30-8
Our Ladies lost the Rosebowl 3-0 but they all bowled well
Mens Pairs – Bob Hayter skipped this game with Dave Fussell leading they played against Steve Ayton and Peter Shemilt. The rink was challenging for both teams, Our pair led 7-5 after 7 ends they then dropped a 6 to fall behind 11-7, Bob struggled with the speed but not as much as Dave as they fell further behind and were 19-11 down after 13 ends. Bob & Dave really dugged deep in the next last 5 ends and both bowled well and claimed 15 shots to win 26-19 a great comeback.
Mens Triples – Colin Milner skipped our triple and had Brian Metzner and Terry Eldridge wuth him they were against Malcolm Songer, Dave Garrard and Steve Gransby. Our triple were also on a difficult rink but found it early on and led 11-6 after 6 ends. They then lost their way and lost the next 6 ends and were 18-11 down. Our rink recovered well and moved ahead and led 20-13 with 2 ends to play, they dropped 2 shots on the last 2 ends and won 20-15

The Jack Goff Trophy 24th August 2024
The EHBA visited our green to play this annual game, Last year’s game was interupted by Thunder and Lightning and we could only complete 15 ends. This year’s game was again effected by the weather with only 5 ends completed before the heavens opened and the green was flooded and no more play was allowed. Everybody then sat down for a lovely meal provided by our ladies who worked hard preparing and then changing all the cooking times. What a great performance well done to you all. The result was 44-22 to Hoddesdon & Rye Park but with only 6 ends played I’m not sure we can claim the win.

Peter Hayden was playing in his first final and Barry Osman was playing in his 10th final. Barry started the better and was 8-3 ahead after 6 ends. With both bowlers copping well in the afternoon sun Peter then levelled the game after 10 ends at 9 all. Peter then pulled away after winning 6 ends on the trot to lead 14-9, but with Barry’s experience he eased back and levelled the score again at 14 all after 17 ends. They were level again at 15 all and 16 all in this tense game. Barry then moved ahead at 18-16. The next end saw Barry holding match then Peter with his last wood drew the shot and prolong this great game. Barry won the next end to lead 19-17 the Peter won the next end to level the score at 19 all. Peter then bowled to very good woods to hold 2 and Barry with his last just failed and Peter Hayden became the Men’s Club Champion with a 21-19 victory. Great game well bowled Gents.
Mens Consolation Singles
Richard Rogers was playing Terry Pook in the Consolation Singles which is for Men bowlers who have not won the Club Championship or the Men’s Handicap. Richard’s experience played a big part in this game. Richard moved ahead early and was 8-2 up after 5 ends. Terry pulled back a few shots however Richard moved away leading all the way to the finishing line winning 21-11 to claim his 3rd Consolation Singles. Well done for a great game.
Beryl Sambridge 3 Wood Singles
Richard Rogers took on Tim Maynard and this could have gone either way. Both bowlers were bowling well and this nip and tuck. With only 18 ends scheduled it was still even after 12 ends at 8 all. Richard then took the lead however Tim then turned it on picking up 8 shots in the next 3 ends to lead 16-9 and there were not enough ends for Richard, well done Tim.
4 Wood Mixed Pairs
Colin Milner & Karen Gray played Les Austin & Sue Gibbs. In this extreme heat and Les being 90+ I think the heat took its toll on this game. Colin & Karen bowled very well as a pair and they started well winning 8 out of the first 9 ends to lead 14-3. In the extreme heat Colin & Karen kept pilling in the shots and won 29-8. Very well done to you all in this heat, well bowled.
Men’s 4 Wood Pairs
Colin Pethurst & Terry Pook took on Phil Jaggs & Walter Richardson, In this extreme heat and Walter being 90+ I think the heat took its toll on this game as well. The match started evenly and after 7 ends it was 5 all. Terry & Colin then won 7 ends out of the next 8 to lead 20-6, this was always going to be challenge for Phil & Walter. When Colin & Terry picked another 4 on the 17th end Walter & Phil conceded at 25-7. Well bowled the score was not a true reflection on the game, but well done Terry & Colin..

Men’s 2 Wood Pairs
Colin Milner & Richard Mansfield played Andy Adkins & Terry Hampton in one of the hardest competitions we have. Both teams were well matched. Colin & Richard won 6 out of the first 7 ends to lead 6-3. Andy & Terry then eased their way back to level this game and after 13 ends it was 8 all. Andy & Terry then moved ahead to lead 12-8, Colin & Richard then pulled back and levelled the game at 14 all on the 20th end. 1 end shot out. With Colin & Richard holding 2 could Andy produce another Thurgood winning last wood show, well it was close but just didn’t make it and Colin& Richard won 15-14 what a game well played.
3 Wood Pairs – CAMA Cup
Dale Large & Micky Towers played Bob Hayter & Dave Fussell. Dale & Micky got off to a flyer and were 17-4 up after 7 ends. Dave & Bob did rally and reduced the deficit to 17-12. The game became very interesting when Bob & Dave got within 3 at 21-18 with 2 ends to play, the 17th end saw Bob & Dave holding when Micky found a way through and Micky & Dale picked up a 3 to lead 24-18 and there was no way back. Well done to Micky & Dale.
Bully’s 11
This competition was Sponsored by the late Alan Bull. This was a record turnout for this competition after the sad passing of Alan in late 2022. Micky Towers was playing Sue Metzner for the first to win 6 ends. After 4 ends it was 2 all, Micky then won the next 4 ends to win 6-2. Well done.
Men’s Handicap
Colin Milner played Andy Adkins with Colin getting a 2 shot start and playing his third game of the day was always going to be hard. After 7 ends Andy had moved in front by 1 shot at 6-5. Andy then won 6 ends on the trot to lead 18-5. Colin then had a big job on his hands and won the next 2 ends making the score 18-8. Andy then found the 3 he needed to win 21-8 and claim the Handicap match, well done gents.

Parkhill & Rose Bowl Trophies 1st September 2023
We hosted the Park Hill & Rose Bowl Competition today.
The Rose Bowl this year was restricted as we didnt have enough Lady bowlers to take part. We did manage to play a Pair and Triple. Our Pair was Julie Stevenson & Sue Metzner, they started well and were leading after 9 ends 9-7. Then Gill Bowtell & Janet Day took control and came away winning 25-16. The Triple was skipped by Jean Matthews, she was with Sue Gibbs & Debbie Ince. Our ladies again started well and were 6-0 up after 5 ends, after 8 ends it was level at 6 all. The Rosehill ladies skipped by Di Smith then took control and led 14-6 after13 ends, our ladies did rally but still lost 16-10.
The Park Hill Trophy was a very tight affair. Our 4’s was skipped by Dale Large, he was with Alan Blackwell, Walter Richardson & Colin Ince. We were always chasing this game however Malcolm Songer skipping the Rosehill 4’s came in on a number of occasions to claim shot or reduce the a possible large count for us, we eventually lost this 14-11.
Our Triples was skipped by Barry Osman he was with Aldo Martellotta and Brian Metzner. The Rosehill triple played well and led up to the 12th end when the score was at 12-9. The next 2 ends completly changed the game when Barry’s triple picked up a 6 followed by a 7 to lead 22-12. With 4 ends to play this game looked over but Rosehill came back with two 4’s to reduce the lead to 22-20. The next two ends were very tence but we managed to win 24-20. So with 1 match all and 1 shot up the Park Hill was decided on the Pairs. Don Stevenson & Bert Gray kept it tight early on and were 6 all after 8 ends. The Rosehill pair Peter Shemilt & Steve Ayton then started to pull away and led 16-8 after15 ends, Don & Bert came back well and with 2 ends to play we were 15-16 down. The last 2 ends were very close but we just couldn’t get over the line and lost 18-15. So overall it was a 2 games to 1 loss, with a shot difference of 2, Well Done Rosehill on winning The Rose Bowl & Park Hill Trophies this year.
Due to 14 of our bowlers playing in the East Hertfordshire Bowls Associations Finals on Sunday 3rd September at Ware BC. The friendly against Ware BC has been cancelled by mutual agreement, as a number of Ware BC bowlers are also in the finals and they are also providing the refreshments all day.

Scott Blain Semi-Final 11th August 2023 (Home)
HRPBC 67 (6) V (4) 71 Broomfield BC
We welcomed Broomfield to our green. The last time we played Broomfield BC was in the Final last season where they beat us 10-0. So we were looking to turn that result around.
Singles – Micky Towers had a very tight game and he played 23 ends before he won. After 14 ends it was all level at 11 all. Micky then pulled away and 5 ends later he led 17-13. Micky was leading 20-14 when with his last wood he trailed the jack to win 21-14.
Pairs – Colin Milner & Tim Maynard were playing again after last weeks result against Holtwhites. They got off to a slow but pulled back to only being 7-6 down after 6 ends. They then lost 6 of the next 8 ends and were then 24-10 down. They tried to keep it tight but still lost17-32.
Triples – Bob Hayter skipped the triples with Andy Adkins and Terry Eldridge. They dropped a 5 on the 2nd end but clawed it back to lead 7-5 after 6 ends. This game could have gone either way and it was level on the 8th, 11th, 13th and 15th end when the score was 11 all. They then took the lead at 13-11 with only one end to play. The fours had just finished which meant Broomfield had to win this match. The final saw us 1 down but as they needed 3 their skip tried to kill it but he missed and we won 13-12.
Fours – Barry Osman skipped this with Dave Fussell leading and Richard Rogers and Don Stevenson playing 2 & 3. They started well and lead 5-1 after 4 ends, they then lost the next 5 ends and were 6-5 down. The 10th saw us pick up a 6, we then moved into a 15-8 lead. The Broomfield team then made it 15-13. With one end to play, we were 2 down and Barry with his last wood turned our wood over to win 16-13.
Great result all round Well done. It’s now Rosedale BC in the final on Sunday 27th August – Location unknown.

The Rockets travelled to Much Hadham for our final game of the season. Walter Richardson skipped our winning triple with Colin Pethurst & Greg Dunford. They held the lead until the 17th end when they fell behind at 17-18. The final end saw that Rye Park spirit as they collect 3 shots to win 20-18. The other triple was skipped by Bert Gray he was with Mick Wilkins and Terry Hampton. They were behind up to the 9th end when the scores were level at 9 all. The Much Hadham triple then pulled away to lead after 17 ends with the score at 13-16. So we needed 4 shots to win all 6 points, 3 shots to draw this game or 2 shots to seal the overall win, but we just came up short losing 15-16, but we picked up an overall win. Overall another very good result.
Lyndhurst Trophy 9th August 2023 Semi Final

This game was level at 7 all after 7 ends. The Ware team then pulled away to lead 13-7. A good comeback by our triple but just wasn’t enough as they lost by 2 shots. So overall a loss by 1 shot. So close but yet so far away. Unlucky.

Our rink took the lead after 4 ends at 4-2, after 12 ends they still had their 2 shot lead at 8-6. The next 3 ends our rink picked up a 6 & 4 to lead 18-8. Garry’s team then made their move and pulled it back to 19-16. The 20th end they were holding 4 shots when Bob with his last wood got an outrageous wick to get the shot. Our rink went on to win 20-18. Micky Towers skipped the other with Dale Large, Colin Milner & Tim Maynard they were against Dan MacKenzie, Jim Sapsed, Chris Sage and John Moore. Another even game saw it all level after 8 ends at 5 all. We moved ahead and again Hertford came back to level after 14 ends and it was 12 all. We then led after 20 ends at 18-16 and we were overall leading by 4 shots. Hertford were holding 3 when Dan Mackenzie eased our 4th wood out to win 20-18. An extra end was required and was played on Bob’s rink, Hertford were holding shot when Andy drew the shot and thankfully it stayed there and we won . Well done we now face Northaw & Cuffley in the Final on 3rd September at the EBHA Finals.
